Scientific Background :ATG4B is a cysteine protease that plays a crucial role in the process of autophagy, which is a cellular mechanism for degradation and recycling of intracellular components. ATG4B is one of four mammalian orthologs of the yeast protein Atg4, which cleaves the C-terminal region of the Atg8 protein to expose a glycine residue that is required for its conjugation to phosphatidylethanolamine during autophagosome formation. In mammals, ATG4B has been shown to be involved in the processing of several Atg8 homologs, including LC3B and GABARAPL1, which are essential for the formation and maturation of the autophagosome.
