Scientific Background :PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that was identified initially in cancer cells as a gene up-regulated by overexpression of the major tumor suppressor, PTEN. It localizes to mitochondria, and regulates multiple aspects of mitochondrial biology. It is implicated in ubiquitin-dependent protein catabolic process to clear damaged mitochondria through selective autophagy (mitophagy). Mutations in the PINK1 gene are linked to early-onset recessive Parkinson disease.
